week three 9/8-9/14

I went to Kentucky Mudworks on Monday and bought some red earthenware to use once I run out of my leftover Kansas clay. It is unfortunately kind of a doodie brown color which I am not gonna like working with. I am obsessed with the color of my Kansas clay as wet clay, it is the most beautiful clay and I’ll miss it dearly when it’s gone. I must find a recipe for a nice red clay body that also stuns as wet clay.

This week I worked on my two shrines that I started last Sunday.

In our Dirtbags meeting we discussed plans for the upcoming market that I can’t remember the name of at the moment. We’re going to have a make-a-thon next week and the week after to work on pieces for that market. I want to make candlesticks and goblets and perhaps sippy cups (black slip and poppies). I was also struck with a sudden inspiration to make column-inspired cups and goblets.

On Saturday morning Emma helped me mix clay to use for our Dirtbags work for that market. My first time mixing a full batch of clay! Very fun and messy.

I spent a few hours in the studio on Sunday finishing up my second shrine (I finished sculpting the girlhood one on Thursday).

I was thinking of acanthus leaves and dainty filigree, leaning into the ideas of hair brooch and architecture. I didn’t have a very specific sketch or idea for the layout of the design, but overall I think I am happy with how it turned out. I’m trying to not get too bogged down with every piece I do being perfect, but rather letting myself explore as I go.

I’m not sure if that is just an excuse.
